Hattie McDaniel (July 16, 1921 – March 17, 2011) was an American actress and singer, whose career spanned seven decades. She starred in 61 films and became the first African American to win an Academy Award when she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Gone with the Wind (1939). She also became the first African American to win a competitive Oscar. She received an honorary Academy Award in 1990
McDaniel was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and moved to Detroit with her family at the age of three years. Her family moved back to Fort Worth when she was nine years old.
